Carrick, Bruno Fernandes Hold Talks Ahead of Manchester United’s Chelsea Clash

Posted : 28 October 2026

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick and captain Bruno Fernandes have held private discussions to resolve tensions following a disagreement over the team's tactics, as the club prepares for Saturday's Premier League encounter against Chelsea. The meeting took place at United's Carrington training ground on Tuesday, according to media reports.

The discussions followed Fernandes' omission from the starting line-up for United's 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth on Sunday. The Portuguese midfielder remained an unused substitute after publicly questioning Carrick's tactical approach during the team's 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como.

Fernandes had suggested that United needed to apply more aggressive pressure against opponents instead of allowing them time and space to control possession. He also argued that the team's approach made it easier for opposition players to gain confidence and frustrate United.

Carrick subsequently left his captain on the bench against Bournemouth, describing his team selection as a footballing decision. The move fuelled speculation about the relationship between the pair at a time when the manager was already facing mounting pressure over the team's poor results.

It remains unclear whether Fernandes apologised for his comments during the private meeting. However, reports indicate that the two men are seeking to move beyond the disagreement, with the midfielder now in contention to return to the starting line-up against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Carrick is also under pressure to improve United's performances after a difficult run of results. The 3-0 loss to Bournemouth extended the club's winless streak to eight matches across competitions, leaving them 16th in the Premier League standings.

Despite speculation that he could be dismissed following the Bournemouth defeat, United's hierarchy has decided to give Carrick another opportunity to turn the situation around. The club's leadership reportedly believes the squad has enough quality to compete for Champions League qualification and that the players must take responsibility for their performances.

There was further encouragement for the manager on Wednesday when midfielder Kobbie Mainoo returned to training after spending two weeks out with an injury. His availability could provide an additional option as United attempt to improve their results.

Nevertheless, Carrick's future remains uncertain, with reports suggesting that former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann are among the potential alternatives being considered. Howe's appointment could involve a compensation payment to Newcastle, while Nagelsmann would not require a transfer-style compensation fee if available as a free agent.

For now, attention turns to Saturday's meeting with Chelsea, where United will be looking to end their disappointing run and restore confidence within the squad. Fernandes' possible return could be significant, but the outcome of the match may also influence the pressure surrounding Carrick's position at Old Trafford.
