Carlo Ancelotti Takes Charge as Brazil Target Sixth World Cup Glory

Posted : 26 May 2026

Brazil have turned to one of Europe’s most successful managers, Carlo Ancelotti, in their renewed bid to reclaim the FIFA World Cup and secure a record sixth title.

The 66-year-old Italian has been appointed with the mission of ending Brazil’s 24-year wait for global glory, a drought that mirrors the gap between their 1970 triumph and their 1994 victory. Since lifting the trophy in 2002, the Seleção have repeatedly fallen short on the world stage, including a painful 7-1 semi-final defeat to Germany in 2014 and multiple quarter-final exits.

Ancelotti arrives with an unrivalled pedigree in club football, having won five UEFA Champions League titles and league championships across Europe’s top divisions. Despite his success, he has described his role with Brazil as a privilege rather than an obsession, embracing the challenge of leading what he calls the most prestigious national team in football.

Since the last World Cup, Brazil have gone through several coaching changes before settling on Ancelotti, following inconsistent qualification campaigns and disappointing tournament performances. His arrival has brought renewed optimism, although results under his early tenure have been mixed as he experiments with tactics and squad combinations.

The current Brazil squad remains a blend of experience and youth, with several veterans retained from previous World Cup campaigns. However, injuries to key players such as Éder Militão and Rodrygo have forced adjustments, while Neymar’s recall has sparked debate given his long absence from international football due to injury.

Despite this, attacking responsibilities are expected to fall on players like Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, and Matheus Cunha, while Casemiro and Bruno Guimarães anchor the midfield. Defensive leadership is set to come from Gabriel Magalhães and Marquinhos, both of whom arrive from a demanding European season.

Brazil enter the tournament with a group featuring Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland, beginning their campaign on June 13 in New Jersey. However, concerns remain over their record against European teams in knockout stages, where they have not recorded a win since their 2002 triumph.

In recognition of his status, the Brazilian Football Confederation has already extended Ancelotti’s contract through to the 2030 World Cup, signalling long-term confidence in his leadership.

CBF president Samir Xaud praised the appointment, calling Ancelotti the world’s most successful coach and stressing the importance of building a lasting legacy for Brazilian football.
