Cameroon have finally unveiled their 28-man squad for this week’s World Cup playoffs in Morocco as they aim to keep their qualification hopes alive for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The Indomitable Lions finished among the four best runners-up in the African qualifying series, earning a chance to progress through the playoffs. They will first face the Democratic Republic of Congo on Thursday in the semifinals before a potential clash against the winner of Gabon versus Nigeria on Sunday. The overall winner of the African playoffs will advance to the intercontinental stage in March, where the final two tickets for the 48-team World Cup will be decided.
Head coach Marc Brys has opted for experience, recalling Yvan Neyou and Jean Onana to strengthen the midfield, while Wilitty Younoussa, Enzo Boyomo, and Darlin Yongwa also return. However, Brice Ambina, Samuel Kotto, and Junior Tchamadeu have been left out. The selection hints at Brys’s possible plans for the Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Morocco next month.
The announcement of the squad came later than expected following tension between Brys and the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT). The Belgian coach reportedly refused to travel to Cameroon for a press conference as instructed by FECAFOOT, opting instead to head directly to Morocco. His long-running disagreement with federation president Samuel Eto’o has continued to cast a shadow over the national team setup.
Cameroon have been drawn in Group G for the Africa Cup of Nations, alongside Gabon, Mozambique, and defending champions Ivory Coast. The current squad features a blend of established stars and emerging talents drawn from top European clubs and other leagues across the world.
Among the notable inclusions are Andre Onana of Trabzonspor, Franck Zambo Anguissa of Napoli, Bryan Mbeumo of Manchester United, Vincent Aboubakar of Neftchi Baku, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting of New York Red Bulls. Their experience will be crucial as Cameroon seek to navigate the playoffs and secure their place at another World Cup.
