Cameroon Hit by Injuries Ahead of World Cup Playoff Against DR Congo

Posted : 12 November 2025

Cameroon’s preparations for Thursday’s World Cup playoff against the Democratic Republic of Congo have been severely disrupted by injuries to two key players, with a potential third also uncertain. Veteran striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and midfield star Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa have been ruled out of the clash in Rabat, putting the Indomitable Lions’ World Cup ambitions at risk.

Choupo-Moting is sidelined with a knee sprain, while Zambo Anguissa missed Tuesday’s training due to a hamstring issue. The midfielder, who celebrates his 30th birthday on Sunday, has been in fine form this season, scoring four goals for Napoli in Serie A. Additionally, goalkeeper Andre Onana is a doubt after sustaining an ankle injury, according to officials from the Cameroonian football federation.

Cameroon is competing in a mini-tournament for the four best runners-up from the nine African World Cup qualifying groups. The playoff system gives one additional African team the chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

A victory on Thursday would see Cameroon advance to the final in Rabat on Sunday, where they would face either Gabon or Nigeria to determine which African side earns a spot in the intercontinental playoff in March. The outcome will decide the final entry to the expanded 48-team tournament.

The Indomitable Lions bring a rich World Cup history to the contest, having competed in eight previous editions, more than any other African nation. With injuries impacting their squad, Cameroon will need resilience and tactical discipline to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
