Cameroon set aside weeks of off-field turmoil to secure a hard-earned 1–0 victory over rivals Gabon in Agadir, thanks to an early strike from Karl Etta Eyong. The Indomitable Lions arrived at the tournament amid confusion over coaching appointments, squad selection controversies and key injuries, but responded with a disciplined display that silenced critics.
Eyong struck after just six minutes, capitalising on a defensive mix-up after Bryan Mbeumo’s quick thinking, to score his first international goal for a youthful Cameroonian side.
The win marked a positive start under local coach David Pagou, whose selection of several new faces raised eyebrows following the omission of established stars.
Etta Eyong’s decisive contribution offered hope that Cameroon can move forward from a difficult period and remain competitive in the tournament. Cameroon now turn their attention to a high-profile clash with defending champions Ivory Coast.
Ivory Coast also began their title defence with a narrow but controlled 1–0 win over Mozambique in Marrakesh. Manchester United winger Amad Diallo scored shortly after the break, firing low into the net after Frank Kessie’s knockdown.
The Elephants dominated proceedings, creating several chances and limiting Mozambique’s attacking threat, with head coach Emerse Faé praising his team’s unity and defensive solidity.
Earlier in Group E, Algeria delivered one of the most impressive performances of the tournament so far, cruising to a 3–0 victory over ten-man Sudan in Rabat.
Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring inside two minutes and added a second in the second half, while young substitute Ibrahim Maza sealed the result late on. Sudan struggled after Salah Adil was sent off before halftime, as Algeria’s depth and attacking quality came to the fore.
Burkina Faso also made headlines in dramatic fashion, overturning a late deficit to beat Equatorial Guinea 2–1.
Despite conceding in the closing stages, the Stallions struck twice deep into stoppage time through Georgie Minoungou and Edmond Tapsoba, completing a remarkable comeback and underlining their reputation as consistent AFCON contenders.
