Calvin Bassey Caught Between Fulham Contract Plans and Inter Milan Interest

Posted : 10 September 2026

Fulham are preparing to open discussions over a new contract for Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey as they seek to secure his future amid reported interest from Inter Milan. The Nigeria international has become an important part of the Premier League club since arriving from Ajax in 2023.

Bassey signed a contract that runs until the summer of 2027, but Fulham also hold an option to extend the agreement for another year. That clause could keep the defender at Craven Cottage until June 2028 and gives the London club greater control over his situation.

The 26-year-old has established himself as one of Fulham's most dependable defensive players. He can operate at centre-back or left-back, giving the team additional flexibility across the back line.

Bassey has made 105 appearances for Fulham in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing one assist, according to the latest reports. His performances were rewarded when he was voted the club's Player of the Season for the 2024/25 campaign. Fulham's official profile also confirms that he finished second in the previous season's award before winning it in 2024/25.

His importance has continued under new head coach Álvaro Arbeloa. Bassey was handed the captain's armband in each of Fulham's opening three Premier League matches of the 2026/27 campaign, underlining the trust placed in him by the new coaching staff.

His progress has also attracted attention from Italy. Inter Milan are among the clubs reported to have monitored the Italy-born defender, with his physical strength, pace and ability to play multiple defensive positions making him an attractive option.

Fulham are therefore looking to strengthen their position by negotiating a fresh long-term agreement rather than waiting for his current contract to enter its final months. The club can already activate the extension clause, but a new deal would provide a stronger indication of their commitment to the Nigeria international.

Bassey is reportedly settled in west London and open to remaining at Fulham. That could work in the club's favor as they attempt to fend off interest from Inter and other potential suitors.

The situation leaves Bassey with an important decision as his profile continues to rise. Fulham want to retain a defender who has become central to their plans, while Inter Milan's reported interest could present the Super Eagles star with an opportunity to test himself at another major European club.
