CAF Suspends Demehin and Echegini Ahead of Super Falcons' Egypt Clash

Nigeria's Super Falcons have been dealt a major blow ahead of their decisive Group C fixture against Egypt at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations after defender Oluwatosin Demehin and midfielder Jennifer Echegini were suspended by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The duo will miss Nigeria's final group-stage match following disciplinary incidents during the Super Falcons' hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia. The win revived Nigeria's hopes of reaching the knockout stage after their opening defeat to Malawi, but it also came at the cost of losing two important players.

Demehin received a straight red card in the 40th minute after bringing down Zambia captain Barbra Banda, who was through on goal during a dangerous counter-attack. The dismissal forced the Super Falcons to play with 10 players for more than 50 minutes, but Justin Madugu's side showed resilience to protect their slender lead until the final whistle.

Echegini also earned a suspension after receiving a yellow card in the second half. It was her second booking of the tournament, triggering an automatic one-match ban under CAF's disciplinary regulations.

The suspensions leave Madugu with important decisions as Nigeria prepare for a must-win encounter against Egypt.

In defence, Shukurat Oladipo is expected to be the leading candidate to replace Demehin in central defence alongside veteran Osinachi Ohale. The change is made more significant with Ashleigh Plumptre still unavailable through injury.

Another option available to the coaching staff is deploying Christy Ucheibe in central defence. The Benfica midfielder temporarily filled that role after Demehin's dismissal against Zambia and helped Nigeria withstand sustained pressure from the Copper Queens.

In midfield, experienced campaigner Halimatu Ayinde could return to partner Ucheibe and Deborah Abiodun, providing greater defensive stability. If Madugu opts for a more attacking approach, Toni Payne is capable of filling Echegini's advanced midfield role with her creativity and ability to drive forward.

Omorinsola Babajide also remains an option, with her pace and direct running potentially allowing captain Rasheedat Ajibade to operate in a more central attacking position.

Meanwhile, defender Michelle Alozie underwent a routine anti-doping test after the Zambia victory. The Chicago Stars FC full-back was selected for the mandatory procedure after being named Woman of the Match following an outstanding display.

Alozie played the entire match, switching from right-back to left-back after Demehin's red card. She produced several crucial interceptions, clearances and tackles as Nigeria successfully defended their advantage despite playing with a numerical disadvantage for much of the contest.

The Super Falcons now face a stern test against Egypt as they seek a place in the knockout rounds without two regular starters.
