In a bold move to reshape the competitive landscape of African football, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially unveiled the format for its inaugural African Nations League, a tournament designed to intensify regional rivalries and expand commercial opportunities across the continent.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that the new competition will kick off in 2029 and adopt a zonal structure, dividing participating nations into four geographical blocs — North, West, East, and Southern Africa.
Under the format, each zone will stage its own round of matches, with the respective winners progressing to a final championship tournament to determine the overall continental champion.
In the West African zone, Nigeria’s Super Eagles are set for blockbuster clashes against long-time rivals Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, setting the stage for thrilling encounters steeped in history and pride.
CAF further disclosed that the African Nations League will be held every two years during designated FIFA international windows, positioning the competition as a strategic addition to the global football calendar and a major commercial asset for African football.
Meanwhile, the continental body confirmed a significant adjustment to its flagship tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations, which will transition to a four-year cycle after the 2028 edition.
The introduction of the African Nations League signals CAF’s ambition to strengthen intra-continental competition while enhancing the commercial and global appeal of African football.
