CAF Inspection Team Arrives in Kenya Ahead of AFCON 2027

The Confederation of African Football inspection team has arrived in Kenya to assess the country's preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The inspection is focused on facilities that will be used when Kenya co-hosts the tournament with Uganda and Tanzania.

The delegation began its assessment in Nairobi on Thursday. The inspection will cover stadiums, training grounds, hotels, airports and hospitals, with infrastructure identified as one of the main areas under review.

Kenya's Local Organising Committee chairman Nicholas Musonye confirmed that the CAF team would inspect all the stadiums and training facilities proposed for the tournament. The delegation is also expected to visit Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, which has been restored to Kenya's list of possible venues.

The country's two main proposed match venues are the 48,000-capacity Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani and the 60,000-capacity Talanta Sports City. Kenya has also listed several training venues, including Nyayo National Stadium, Ulinzi Sports Complex, Police Sacco Stadium and facilities at Kasarani.

The inspection is particularly important because CAF previously raised concerns about the readiness of venues across the three host countries. Following an earlier inspection in February, CAF reported that none of the proposed stadiums in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania met all the required standards at that stage.

CAF subsequently set targets for the host nations to meet before the latest assessment. Match venues were expected to reach at least 80 per cent physical completion, while all stadiums and training facilities have a January 2027 deadline to become fully operational.

The inspection will also assess areas such as safety, security and the overall suitability of the venues. CAF's stadium regulations require facilities to meet standards covering the pitch, floodlights, spectator safety, security, comfort and media facilities before approval can be granted.

Kenya has stepped up preparations ahead of the inspection. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya chaired a meeting of the Pamoja AFCON Oversight Committee to review progress, while Football Kenya Federation president Hussein Mohammed said the country remained committed to delivering the tournament.

The 2027 AFCON will be the first edition jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The tournament is scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, making the current inspection a key stage in the preparations for the continental championship.
