CAF Considers Relocation of 2027 AFCON Amid Host Preparation Delays

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is reportedly exploring contingency options for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations as concerns grow over preparations in co-hosts Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The tournament is scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

The three East African nations were awarded the hosting rights for the 2027 tournament. It will be the first time Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania jointly stage the continental championship.

Concerns have focused on the pace of infrastructure work, particularly in Kenya and Uganda. CAF inspections have covered stadiums, training grounds, hotels, transport facilities and other infrastructure required for the 24-team tournament.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has called for greater urgency from the host countries. Following recent inspections, he acknowledged that significant work remains while maintaining that the tournament is still scheduled to take place in East Africa.

A report by Le Monde said CAF has explored possible alternatives if the current hosts fail to meet the required deadlines. The report identified Morocco, South Africa, Algeria, Egypt and Côte d’Ivoire as countries with existing infrastructure that could potentially stage the competition at short notice.

According to the report, Morocco, South Africa and Algeria have been contacted by CAF. However, this does not amount to a formal decision to move the tournament away from East Africa.

CAF has continued to publicly back the preparations of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. An official CAF inspection in September included the newly built 60,000-capacity Talanta Stadium in Nairobi, as well as Kasarani Stadium and other tournament facilities.

The situation remains under monitoring, with further assessments expected as the tournament approaches. CAF is also scheduled to conduct another inspection in January 2027, according to Le Monde.

The preparations have already drawn attention over accommodation and visa arrangements. In Uganda, CAF officials also identified accommodation in some upcountry host cities as an area requiring attention after an inspection visit.

For now, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania remain the official hosts of AFCON 2027. The reported contingency discussions underline the pressure on the three countries to complete the required stadium, accommodation, transport and organisational work before CAF’s deadlines.
