CAF Changes Referee for Ghana vs Gambia in 2027 AFCON Qualifier

Posted : 23 September 2026

The Confederation of African Football has made a late change to the officiating team for Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia. Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed has been replaced by compatriot Mustapha Kechaf for the Group C encounter in Accra on September 29.

Jayed was initially appointed to take charge of the fixture at the Accra Sports Stadium. He has since been withdrawn because of his unavailability, prompting CAF to appoint Kechaf as the new referee for the match.

The fixture is Ghana’s second Group C match of the qualifying campaign. The Black Stars will first travel to Bouaké to face Côte d’Ivoire on September 24 before returning home to host The Gambia five days later.

The Gambia will also have a home fixture before travelling to Ghana. The Scorpions are scheduled to face Somalia on September 25 in their opening Group C qualifier, while Côte d’Ivoire will host Ghana in the other first-round fixture.

The 2027 AFCON qualifiers are being played across six matchdays, with the 48 participating nations divided into 12 groups of four. The top two teams in groups without a co-host will qualify for the finals in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Ghana enter the qualifying campaign with Carlos Queiroz as head coach and a 24-man squad that includes the return of Tottenham midfielder Mohammed Kudus. Kudus missed Ghana’s 2026 World Cup campaign because of injury but has been recalled for the opening AFCON qualifiers.

The Black Stars will also face Morocco in an international friendly on October 4 after their opening two AFCON qualifiers. The Gambia, meanwhile, will be seeking points from the two Group C fixtures as they begin their qualification campaign.

Kechaf will now take charge of the September 29 encounter in Accra following the late adjustment to CAF’s original appointment. The rest of the match preparations will continue with Ghana and The Gambia preparing for their second-round meeting.
