The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled plans to restructure its major competitions, confirming that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be held every four years starting in 2028. The announcement was made by CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe in Morocco on Saturday, ahead of the 2025 AFCON, which opens with Comoros facing the host nation on Sunday.
Dr Motsepe clarified that AFCON will continue as scheduled in 2027 and 2028 before transitioning to the four-year cycle, with the subsequent tournament set for 2032. In addition, the prize money for the champions will see an increase, rising from seven million to ten million US dollars.
Alongside the changes to AFCON, CAF is introducing an annual African Nations League (ANL) to provide more competitive opportunities for national teams across the continent. The new tournament will take place during FIFA international windows in September and October, with the finals scheduled for November each year.
Teams participating in the ANL will be divided into four geographic regions. The North region will feature six teams, while the other three regions will each include 16 teams, ensuring broad representation across the continent.
The move to a four-year AFCON cycle aligns African football with other major international tournaments and aims to reduce fixture congestion, while the ANL provides regular competitive matches for national teams outside of the continental showpiece.
CAF officials emphasized that these changes are designed to enhance the quality of African football, improve player development, and increase the global profile of the continent’s competitions.
With these reforms, African football fans can look forward to more structured and frequent international action, combining the prestige of AFCON with the excitement of the newly launched annual African Nations League.
