Sporting Lagos head coach Jeffery Buter has been handed a N500,000 fine by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after admitting he was wrong to make public comments about the league and its match officials.
The sanction followed an inquest conducted on Wednesday into remarks made by Buter during a post-match media interview after Sporting Lagos’ Lagos Derby against Ikorodu City on September 30.
During the proceedings, the coach acknowledged his error, a development that influenced the panel’s decision to impose the financial penalty rather than a harsher sanction.
The NPFL panel also cautioned Buter against making unsubstantiated public statements concerning the league and its referees.
According to the panel, the decision to impose a relatively lenient punishment was informed by the coach’s admission of wrongdoing and his limited experience in the NPFL.
The disciplinary action underscores the league’s position on public comments concerning its administration and match officials, particularly where allegations are not substantiated.
The league authorities are expected to monitor compliance with the directive as the 2026/2027 season progresses.
