Arsenal and England forward Bukayo Saka received the 2026 Socrates Award at the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on Monday, October 26. Nigerian music star Burna Boy presented the award in recognition of Saka's humanitarian work and efforts to improve the lives of vulnerable children.
Saka earned the honour through his partnership with BigShoe, a charity that provides medical assistance to children in need. In 2022, the footballer helped fund life-changing surgeries for 120 children in Kano, Nigeria, giving them access to medical treatment that their families might otherwise have struggled to afford.
The operations addressed various medical conditions, including hernias and other serious health problems. Saka's contribution reflected his commitment to supporting children in Nigeria, the country of his parents' origin.
The Arsenal forward extended his support beyond Nigeria. In 2023, he also helped fund operations for 100 children in Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania through the same charitable partnership.
During the ceremony, Saka highlighted the impact of the initiative by sharing the story of a 14-year-old boy from Rwanda whose eyesight had been restored through BigShoe. The boy explained how the treatment had improved his ability to read at school and enjoy everyday childhood activities.
Saka said he was grateful for the opportunity to raise awareness of causes that matter to him. He also stressed the importance of helping children who lack the opportunities and resources available to others.
The Socrates Award recognises footballers who use their influence and resources to support humanitarian causes and create positive social change. France Football and Peace and Sport present the honour as part of the annual Ballon d'Or ceremony.
Established in 2022, the award is named after Brazilian football legend Sócrates. He was celebrated not only for his achievements on the pitch but also for his social activism and advocacy for democracy.
Previous recipients include Senegalese forward Sadio Mané, who won the inaugural award in 2022 for his charitable work in his home country. The Xana Foundation, associated with former Spain and Barcelona coach Luis Enrique and his family, received the 2025 honour for supporting children with serious illnesses and their families.
Burna Boy's involvement added a Nigerian connection to the ceremony. Before presenting the award, the Grammy-winning singer spoke about his football academy initiative in Nigeria and his ambition to see a Nigerian talent recognised at the prestigious event in the future.
Saka's recognition highlights the growing role of footballers in humanitarian work beyond their professional careers. His partnership with BigShoe demonstrates how financial support and public awareness can help children access essential medical treatment.
The award also places greater attention on the challenges faced by vulnerable children across Africa, particularly those who need specialised healthcare. Through initiatives such as these, Saka continues to use his platform to support communities connected to his heritage.
