Bundesliga secures five Champions League spots for next season after Dortmund's win

Posted : 02 May 2024

Borussia Dortmund's 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain secures Germany's second place in UEFA's coefficient table, ensuring the Bundesliga will have five teams in the Champions League next season. This achievement comes as part of the revamp to expand the competition to 36 teams, with extra spots awarded to leagues based on their average performance across European competitions.

Dortmund's success contributes significantly to Germany's position, with manager Edin Terzic acknowledging their role in clinching the additional Champions League spot. While the team initially aimed to qualify through Bundesliga standings, the added spot offers a cushion for their season's objectives, ensuring a smoother transition into the prestigious tournament.

The Bundesliga's surge in coefficient ranking was aided by Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen's victories over English clubs in the quarterfinals, reinforcing Germany's position as a dominant force in European football.

With the possibility of Dortmund securing the fifth spot in Bundesliga standings and potentially winning the Champions League, Germany could even see six representatives in the competition, further elevating the league's international standing.
