Bruno Guimaraes Set to Join Arsenal as Newcastle Reveal Player Wanted Exit

Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson has revealed that Bruno Guimaraes was not initially expected to leave the club this summer, but the midfielder made it clear that he wanted a move to Arsenal.

The Premier League champions are set to complete a deal worth around £75 million for the Newcastle captain following progress in negotiations.

Wilson described the decision to sell the 28-year-old as disappointing, but said Guimaraes' desire to move on became an important factor in the club's thinking.

Newcastle had not planned to sell their influential midfielder, but ultimately decided to respond to the player's wishes while ensuring they received a fee they considered appropriate.

Guimaraes reportedly left Newcastle's pre-season camp in Spain after an emotional farewell to his teammates and staff. His departure represents another major change for the club, following the exits of other key players during the past year. (

Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson said the final agreement represented a satisfactory financial outcome for the club, although he acknowledged that Arsenal had initially hoped to negotiate a lower price.

Newcastle are now working on bringing in a replacement, with Wilson indicating that the club wants a more experienced midfielder to complement the younger players already recruited this summer.

The Newcastle hierarchy is also keen to avoid making rushed decisions in the transfer market. Wilson stressed that the club would rather wait for the right opportunity than make an unsuitable signing simply to fill the vacancy created by Guimaraes' departure.
