Bruno Fernandes Wins PFA Player of the Year as Khadija Shaw Claims Women’s Honour

Posted : 26 August 2026

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been named the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Men’s Players’ Player of the Year after an exceptional 2025/26 campaign. The award was decided by fellow professional footballers, making the recognition particularly significant for the Portugal international.

Fernandes was instrumental in United’s recovery last season, helping the club secure a third-place finish in the Premier League and a return to the Champions League. He recorded 21 league assists, setting a new single-season Premier League record and moving beyond the previous benchmark shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. He also contributed nine goals.

The 31-year-old had already been recognised by the Football Writers’ Association, making the PFA award another major individual honour following his influential season. Fernandes became the first Manchester United player since Wayne Rooney in 2010 to receive the prestigious players’ award.

Manchester City forward Khadija “Bunny” Shaw took the women’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year prize for the second time. Shaw scored 21 goals during the campaign, secured her third consecutive Women’s Super League Golden Boot and helped City win their first WSL title in a decade.

There was more success for Manchester City as Nico O’Reilly was voted Men’s Young Player of the Year. The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season, helping City win two domestic trophies before representing England at the 2026 World Cup. He was also selected in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

The PFA Premier League Team of the Year featured five Arsenal players: David Raya, Gabriel Magalhães, William Saliba, Jurriën Timber and Declan Rice. Manchester City supplied O’Reilly, Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo, while Fernandes and Brentford striker Igor Thiago completed the lineup.
