Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has raised concerns about Michael Carrick’s tactical approach following the club’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como on Wednesday. United conceded in the second minute and struggled to recover, extending their winless streak across all competitions to seven matches.
Although Joshua Zirkzee scored a late consolation goal, the performance intensified scrutiny of Carrick’s leadership and the team’s alarming lack of consistency.
Fernandes criticised United’s passive approach without possession, arguing that the team allowed Como too much time and space to control the game.
The Portuguese midfielder suggested that the visitors needed to apply greater pressure and take more risks by pressing higher up the pitch. He also explained that conceding so early damaged the team’s confidence, making it difficult for the players to respond positively and regain control of the contest.
When asked whether his comments amounted to criticism of Carrick’s tactics, Fernandes said responsibility for those decisions rested with the manager and coaching staff.
His remarks came after Como dominated much of the match, with Nico Paz scoring twice and Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon also finding the net.
Carrick admitted that United’s performance was unacceptable, apologised to the travelling supporters and acknowledged that his players had failed to deliver the required intensity and commitment.
Fernandes is the second prominent United player to speak publicly about the club’s problems in recent days. Defender Lisandro Martinez previously questioned the club’s leadership following a defeat to Atletico Madrid before later apologising.
Midfielder Youri Tielemans also admitted that United had been outplayed by Como, stressing that tactical preparation alone was insufficient without the necessary effort and discipline. With pressure mounting and crucial fixtures approaching, Carrick faces an urgent challenge to restore confidence and improve results.
