Bruno Fernandes expressed pride after equalling the Premier League single-season assist record, joining an exclusive group alongside Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
The Manchester United captain registered his 20th assist of the league campaign during his side’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Fernandes set up Bryan Mbeumo for United’s third goal, helping the club secure third place in the table.
Only Henry in the 2002/03 season and De Bruyne in 2019/20 had previously reached the 20-assist milestone in a single Premier League season, placing Fernandes among some of the competition’s greatest playmakers.
The Portuguese midfielder said he felt honoured to be mentioned alongside two iconic Premier League figures and described the achievement as a proud moment in his career. Despite the milestone, Fernandes insisted his focus remains on helping the team rather than individual recognition.
He will now have the opportunity to break the record outright in Manchester United’s final league match of the season against Brighton. Fernandes admitted the possibility is exciting but stressed that his playing style and priorities will remain unchanged.
The 31-year-old, who was recently named Manchester United’s Player of the Year for a record fifth time, revealed he had not seriously considered the record until reaching 19 assists earlier in the campaign.
Celebrations after Mbeumo’s goal highlighted the importance of the moment, with teammates and even goalkeeper Senne Lammens joining in to congratulate Fernandes. However, the midfielder shifted the praise toward his teammate, saying the assist would have meant nothing without the finish.
Fernandes added that creating opportunities for teammates has always been central to his game and that he values collective success above personal accolades.
