Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has strongly denied criticism from club legend Roy Keane, accusing the former midfielder of misrepresenting his comments about chasing the Premier League assist record.
Fernandes set a new Premier League record of 21 assists for Manchester United this season after providing a decisive pass in their 3-0 win over Brighton on Sunday. He had earlier equalled the previous record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Roy Keane had criticised Fernandes’ comments about decision-making in front of goal, suggesting the midfielder was focused on individual milestones rather than team success.
However, Fernandes insisted Keane misunderstood or misquoted him, stating that he never prioritised personal records over winning matches.
The Portuguese midfielder defended himself in an interview, saying he has always respected criticism but drew the line at what he called false claims being attributed to him.
Fernandes added that he even considered reaching out to Keane directly, contacting former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for his phone number to clarify the situation.
Despite the controversy, Fernandes enjoyed a standout season, helping Manchester United finish third in the Premier League and winning both the Football Writers’ Association and Premier League Player of the Season awards.
He reiterated that he respects Keane’s legacy at the club but wants opinions based only on his actual words and actions.
