Bristol City stun West Ham in FA Cup replay, Conway's goal secures fourth round berth

Posted : 17 January 2024

Bristol City secured a spot in the FA Cup fourth round with a tempestuous replay victory over Premier League side West Ham United at Ashton Gate. Tommy Conway, a product of Bristol City's youth team, capitalized on a poor back pass in the third minute to score the decisive goal, and the hosts earned a well-deserved win.

The match took a heated turn in the second half as West Ham's Saïd Benrahma received a red card, leaving them with 10 men. Conway had also scored in the initial tie, which ended 1-1.

The reward for Bristol City's victory is a home tie in the fourth round against the winner of the match between Premier League side Nottingham Forest and third-tier Blackpool, scheduled for Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Newport County from the fourth tier secured a dream home tie against 12-time winners Manchester United by defeating non-league Eastleigh 3-1. Goals from Aaron Wildig, James Clarke, and Will Evans contributed to Newport County's triumph, earning them a windfall of around £400,000.

In other FA Cup third-round replays, Wolverhampton Wanderers emerged victorious in an all-Premier League clash against Brentford, winning 3-2 after extra time. Matheus Cunha's performance set up a West Midlands derby in the fourth round against second-tier West Bromwich Albion.

Birmingham City secured a 2-1 victory over Hull City in an all-Championship clash, with Koji Miyoshi scoring in stoppage time. Birmingham City's reward is a fourth-round tie against Leicester City.

The FA Cup replay at Ashton Gate provided a thrilling encounter between the second-tier Bristol City and sixth-placed Premier League team West Ham. Despite injuries to key players, West Ham fielded a strong side, but Bristol City's Conway ensured their first third-round exit since 2017.

The match featured a frantic start, with Conway's early goal proving to be the decider, and the intensity continued with Benrahma's red card and several close calls for both teams. West Ham manager David Moyes expressed disappointment, citing various factors that didn't favor his team during the match.
