Bristol City Close In on Nigerian Midfielder Gibson Yah

Bristol City have taken the lead in the race to sign Amsterdam-born Nigerian defensive midfielder Gibson Yah, moving ahead of Championship rivals Portsmouth as the summer transfer window gathers pace.

Portsmouth had previously been reported as the frontrunners to secure the services of the FC Volendam midfielder. However, the latest reports indicate that Bristol City have made decisive progress and are now on the verge of completing the transfer.

The Robins have identified the 22-year-old as a replacement for experienced midfielder Sam Morsy, who is expected to leave the club when his contract expires on June 30. Strengthening the midfield has become a priority, and Yah has emerged as the club's preferred option.

According to transfer reports, Bristol City have already reached a verbal agreement with both FC Volendam and the player. Yah has travelled to England to undergo a medical, with the transfer expected to be completed once the routine examinations are successfully concluded.

The move would end the midfielder's stay at FC Volendam after just one season. He joined the Dutch club from FC Utrecht last summer, having previously developed through the youth systems of DVC Buiksloot and Ajax Amsterdam.

Although FC Volendam endured a difficult campaign that ended in relegation, Yah established himself as an important member of the squad. He started 20 of the club's 34 Eredivisie matches and also featured during the Keuken Kampioen Play-Offs, demonstrating his consistency in midfield.

Known for his defensive awareness, ball-winning ability and composure in possession, Yah is regarded as a player with significant potential. His performances in the Netherlands have attracted attention from several clubs, but Bristol City appear to have moved quickest to secure his signature.

The Championship side are expected to hand the Nigerian a long-term contract as part of their plans to strengthen the squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. His arrival would provide additional energy and defensive stability in midfield while offering room for further development.

For Yah, the move represents an opportunity to test himself in English football and continue his progression at a competitive level. A successful spell in the Championship could also strengthen his prospects of earning greater recognition within Nigeria's national team setup in the future.
