Brighton Thrash 10-Man Coventry 5–0 to Move into Premier League Top Four

Posted : 13 September 2026

Brighton & Hove Albion produced a ruthless attacking display on Sunday, defeating 10-man Coventry City 5–0 to move into fourth place in the Premier League and deepen Frank Lampard’s side’s early-season crisis.

Charalampos Kostoulas opened the scoring in the 35th minute before Malick Yalcouyé doubled Brighton’s advantage shortly after half-time. Taiwo Awoniyi’s dismissal then left Coventry with 10 men and made a difficult afternoon even worse for the hosts.

Pascal Groß converted a penalty in the 70th minute after Bobby Thomas brought down Kostoulas in the box. Lewis Dunk then produced the goal of the match, curling a spectacular long-range effort into the top corner before Yasin Ayari completed the rout in stoppage time.

Coventry had shown some attacking promise early on, with Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen making important saves to deny Jack Rudoni and Frank Onyeka. However, the hosts struggled to turn their opportunities into goals and were eventually overwhelmed by Brighton’s finishing.

Awoniyi’s red card came early in the second half when he caught Maxim De Cuyper in the face with his arm during an aerial challenge. The dismissal was upheld after a VAR review and further reduced Coventry’s chances of recovering from the two-goal deficit.

The defeat leaves Coventry at the bottom of the Premier League with no points and no goals from their opening four matches since returning to the top flight. They have now lost all four games, becoming only the second Premier League side to begin a season with four consecutive defeats without scoring.

For Brighton, the emphatic victory lifted them into the top four and provided their second league win of the campaign. The Seagulls have also shown considerable attacking strength, scoring five times in Coventry after producing four in their opening-day victory over Aston Villa.

Lampard acknowledged the difficulty of the defeat, while Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler praised the variety of goalscorers available to his team. Brighton’s convincing victory further underlined their strong start, while Coventry face an increasingly difficult battle to secure their first points and goals of the season.
