Brighton 3-0 Arsenal: Arteta Calls Defeat a Big Lesson

Posted : 20 September 2026

Arsenal's perfect start to their Premier League title defence came to an abrupt end as Brighton & Hove Albion secured a convincing 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium on Saturday. The result ended Arsenal's run of seven wins in all competitions this season and moved Brighton into third place in the Premier League table.

Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 31st minute before Charalampos Kostoulas doubled Brighton's advantage just before half-time. Chema Andres added a third goal in the 57th minute as Fabian Hurzeler's side completed a dominant performance against the defending champions.

The defeat was Arsenal's first league loss of the campaign and their heaviest Premier League defeat in three years. The Gunners had also conceded only once in their first four league matches before Brighton exposed problems in their defensive structure and midfield control.

Arteta admitted that his team were well below the required level. He said Brighton were stronger in the key duels and repeatedly won second balls, while Arsenal made technical errors that allowed the hosts to maintain pressure. The Arsenal manager described the defeat as a "big lesson" in understanding what is required to compete at the highest level.

Brighton's pressing was a major factor in the result. Sky Sports reported that the hosts won possession in the final third nine times, the second-highest figure recorded by a team in a Premier League match this season. It was also the highest such total against Arsenal across this season and the previous campaign.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler praised his players for their intensity and togetherness. He said the team were difficult to play against because they handled the basic elements of the match well and won their individual battles. The victory lifted Brighton to third, two points behind Arsenal.

The Seagulls have also made an impressive attacking start to the campaign. Their 16 goals after five league matches are the most scored by any Premier League side at this stage since Manchester City recorded 19 at the beginning of the 2022-23 season.

Arsenal will now enter the international break with their winning run ended and questions raised about their ability to respond to intense physical pressure. Arteta, however, stressed that the defeat should not erase the progress his side made during the opening weeks of the season.
