Brentford Break Transfer Record to Sign Mali Midfielder Mamadou Sangare

Brentford have completed the signing of Mali international Mamadou Sangare from French side Lens in a club-record transfer. The 24-year-old midfielder has agreed to a five-year contract with the Premier League club, which also holds the option to extend his stay by an additional year.

Although Brentford did not disclose the financial details of the deal, the club confirmed that the transfer fee exceeds the previous record of £42.5 million paid to sign Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth last summer.

Head coach Keith Andrews revealed that Sangare had been a long-term target, praising the midfielder's development and consistent performances over the past season.

"Mamadou is someone we've followed for quite some time. He has been on our radar, and we were eager to bring him to the club," Andrews said.

The Brentford boss highlighted Sangare's impressive campaign with Lens, where he established himself as a key performer after gaining valuable experience during several loan spells. He also commended the midfielder's growing influence with the Mali national team.

Sangare featured in 33 matches for Lens last season after joining the Ligue 1 club from Rapid Vienna. His career began at Red Bull Salzburg before loan spells helped him develop, with standout displays at Hartberg earning him a move to Rapid Vienna.

On the international stage, Sangare has earned 16 caps for Mali and represented his country at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, further enhancing his reputation as one of the nation's rising midfield talents.

Andrews also spoke positively about Sangare's character, describing him as humble, ambitious, and an ideal fit for Brentford's culture.

"From our conversations, it's clear he is excited about joining Brentford. He is humble, determined to succeed, and embodies everything we look for in a player, both on and off the pitch. I believe he will quickly become a fans' favourite," he added.
