Brazil Eye Knockout Berth as World Cup Group Stage Reaches Crucial Phase

Posted : 24 June 2026

Brazil will look to secure qualification for the World Cup knockout stage when they face Scotland on Wednesday, as the tournament enters a pivotal phase with all remaining group matches being played simultaneously.

The five-time world champions are in a strong position to advance, but they face a Scotland side eager to make history by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time. The encounter in Miami is expected to be one of the standout matches of a packed day featuring six games.

Group C remains finely balanced. Morocco, who impressed by holding Brazil to a 1-1 draw earlier in the tournament, will take on Haiti knowing a victory could send them to the top of the group if Brazil fail to overcome Scotland. Such a scenario could alter Brazil’s route through the latter stages of the competition and potentially create a more difficult path.

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti received a major boost ahead of the match after confirming that Neymar has recovered from injury and is available for selection. The experienced forward has yet to feature in the tournament but could make his first appearance against Scotland. Ancelotti praised Neymar’s influence within the squad, highlighting his experience and ability to guide younger teammates.

The return of Neymar comes at an important time for Brazil, who will be without winger Raphinha due to an injury expected to sideline him for approximately two weeks.

Elsewhere, co-hosts Mexico have already guaranteed their place in the knockout rounds after winning their opening two matches and securing top spot in Group A. They will face the Czech Republic, who must claim victory to keep their qualification hopes alive.

South Africa, boosted by an improved display in their draw against the Czech Republic, will take on South Korea in another crucial Group A clash. Both teams remain in contention for a place in the last 32, adding further significance to the encounter.

In Group C, already-qualified Canada will meet Switzerland in Vancouver. The equation is straightforward for the Swiss side: a win guarantees progression to the knockout phase. Any other result would leave their fate dependent on outcomes elsewhere in the group.

The group's other fixture will see Bosnia and Herzegovina face Qatar. Despite Qatar suffering a heavy defeat to Canada in their previous outing, both teams still retain slim hopes of advancing.

Wednesday marks the beginning of four consecutive days featuring six matches per day, a consequence of the World Cup's expansion to 48 teams. The format has increased the number of decisive group-stage fixtures and heightened the drama as teams battle for places in the knockout rounds.

On Tuesday, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo made headlines by becoming the first player to score in six different World Cups. The 41-year-old responded emphatically to criticism following Portugal's opening draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo, scoring twice in a dominant 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan.

Meanwhile, England were held to a goalless draw by Ghana, leaving their qualification hopes unresolved ahead of a decisive final group match against Panama. Colombia, on the other hand, secured their place in the knockout rounds with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo.
