Former South Africa international Bradley Carnell has been named the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) Coach of the Year, capping a remarkable debut season with Philadelphia Union that saw him transform the club from strugglers to league leaders.
Appointed in January, Carnell guided the Union to 66 points — the best record in the 2025 MLS regular season — after the team had finished 23rd overall the previous year. Philadelphia’s turnaround represented the largest year-on-year improvement in the league, with a 29-point increase over 2024, six clear of their nearest rival, Chicago Fire.
Under the 48-year-old’s leadership, Philadelphia registered a club-record 20 wins, lost only once at home, and extended their home unbeaten streak to 16 matches across both the regular season and playoffs. Carnell was also named MLS Coach of the Week on four occasions.
Capped 42 times for Bafana Bafana, Carnell became just the third coach in MLS history to guide two different clubs to at least 55 points in his first season in charge, having previously achieved the feat with St. Louis City SC in 2023.
Philadelphia’s strong form extended beyond the league, with the Union reaching the semifinals of the 2025 U.S. Open Cup, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Nashville SC.
Before joining Philadelphia, Carnell enjoyed success with St. Louis City SC, steering the expansion side to first place in the Western Conference in 2023 and finishing as a finalist for that year’s Coach of the Year award. He also previously served as interim coach at New York Red Bulls between 2017 and 2022.
The MLS Coach of the Year Award is decided by votes from players, club technical staff, and media representatives. Carnell topped the poll with 37.78% of the votes, ahead of Jesper Sørensen (Vancouver Whitecaps) and Mikey Varas (San Diego FC).
