Bournemouth Make History With Memorable Europa League Debut Win

Bournemouth marked the beginning of the first European campaign in the club’s 127-year history with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad in San Sebastian. The Cherries showed both attacking quality and resilience to secure three points in their opening Europa League match.

The achievement represents another significant chapter in Bournemouth’s rise. The club was playing in the fourth tier and dealing with serious financial difficulties only 18 years ago, but successive promotions eventually took them to the Premier League. A sixth-place finish last season under Andoni Iraola secured their first European qualification.

Marco Rose’s team made an excellent start in Spain and took control within the opening 20 minutes. Justin Kluivert scored Bournemouth’s first-ever European goal in the 11th minute, finishing from Adrien Truffert’s cross after a VAR review confirmed the strike.

Bournemouth doubled their advantage nine minutes later. Alex Scott produced an excellent ball across the pitch, allowing Rayan to meet it with a header and put the visitors 2-0 ahead. Evanilson almost added a third before the break, but his header struck the post.

Real Sociedad improved considerably after half-time and began putting Bournemouth under sustained pressure. Sergio Gomez pulled one back in the 57th minute with a cross-shot that found its way into the far corner, setting up a tense final period.

The Cherries had to defend for long spells as the hosts searched for an equaliser, but goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic produced several important saves. His most significant intervention came in stoppage time when he reacted sharply to deny Orri Oskarsson from close range and preserve Bournemouth’s lead.

The result also gave Rose his first victory as Bournemouth manager. He praised the intensity of his players during the opening half, particularly their pressing and ability to win possession high up the pitch, while acknowledging that they had to withstand considerable pressure after the interval.

For Bournemouth’s travelling supporters, the occasion was a remarkable contrast to the club’s struggles less than two decades ago. More than 2,000 fans made the trip to Spain and witnessed the Cherries become European competitors for the first time.

Bournemouth will now look to build on their historic opening victory when they continue their Europa League campaign against Sturm Graz on October 15, before welcoming AC Milan for their first European home fixture.
