Bournemouth Come From Behind to Draw Sunderland

Posted : 28 February 2026

Eliezer Mayenda put Sunderland AFC ahead in the 18th minute, capitalising on a rebound after goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic parried Habib Diarra’s powerful shot straight into the Spaniard’s path. Sunderland looked poised to extend their lead but were unable to convert several opportunities into goals.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola responded at half-time by substituting Evanilson for David Brooks, adding fresh attacking impetus. The Brazilian striker made an immediate impact, netting the equaliser in the 63rd minute. A prolonged VAR review for handball followed, but footage confirmed Evanilson had used his shoulder to meet Marcus Tavernier’s cross, and the goal was awarded.

Sunderland thought they had secured victory in the 81st minute when Diarra found the net, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. The draw allows Bournemouth to maintain their European push, remaining eighth in the table, while Sunderland climb to 11th, ending a three-game losing streak.

In the reverse fixture in November, Sunderland overcame an early 2-0 deficit to beat Bournemouth 3-2 at the Stadium of Light. This time, the visitors started strongly, with Noah Sadiki testing Petrovic and earning a penalty appeal, which was denied by referee Jared Gillett. Mayenda’s goal gave Sunderland an early advantage, and Lutsharel Geertruida’s timely tackle prevented Bournemouth from immediately equalising.

Diarra had a clear chance to double the lead after the break but saw his effort comfortably saved by Petrovic. Despite the missed opportunities, Sunderland can take positives from snapping their losing streak and moving into the top half of the table. Captain Granit Xhaka also returned from injury, making his first start since 17 January.

Looking ahead, Bournemouth will host fellow European hopefuls Brentford at Vitality Stadium on Tuesday, while Sunderland travel to Elland Road to face Leeds at the same time.
