Botafogo Stun PSG with 1-0 Victory in Club World Cup Showdown

Paris Saint-Germain suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Brazil’s Botafogo in the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday, as Igor Jesus' first-half strike sealed a memorable victory for the South American champions. Played in front of more than 53,000 fans at the Pasadena Rose Bowl, the match showcased Botafogo’s defensive grit and tactical discipline, which proved decisive against one of Europe’s most formidable sides. With the win, Botafogo put themselves in prime position to qualify for the tournament’s knockout stage.

 

Despite entering the contest as favourites following their dominant 5-0 Champions League final victory over Inter Milan, PSG failed to break through Botafogo’s structured midfield and defense. Although the French side had the majority of possession, they were unable to convert that dominance into goals.

 

Their best chance came early, when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia forced a save just two minutes into the game, but they struggled to create clear openings thereafter.

 

The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Jefferson Savarino played a superb pass that sliced open PSG’s defense, sending Igor Jesus through on goal. The striker calmly shifted past Willian Pacho and slotted the ball home with a slight deflection off Gianluigi Donnarumma. The goal came against the run of play but was the product of Botafogo’s resilience and sharp execution in transition.

 

PSG pressed hard in the second half, camped deep in Botafogo’s half for long stretches, but their intricate passing patterns were neutralized by a tireless Brazilian midfield. With this victory, Botafogo move closer to the last 16 ahead of their group finale against Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, PSG must regroup quickly to avoid a potential early exit in a competition they were tipped to dominate.
