Brazilian side Botafogo have dismissed head coach Renato Paiva following their elimination from the Club World Cup, despite a standout performance earlier in the tournament. Paiva, who had been in charge for just four months, was sacked days after his team’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to fellow Brazilian club Palmeiras in the round of 16. The club’s decision comes as a surprise to many, especially after Botafogo made headlines by beating Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain during the group stage.
Botafogo’s Club World Cup campaign began with a solid win over Seattle Sounders, followed by their shocking 1-0 victory against PSG. Despite losing 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in their final group match, the team still progressed to the knockout stage as Group B runners-up. However, their journey ended prematurely in the round of 16, and the result ultimately cost Paiva his job.
In an official statement posted on social media, Botafogo expressed gratitude for Paiva and his coaching staff, acknowledging the historic win over PSG and the team's qualification for both the Copa Libertadores and Copa do Brasil round of 16. “The club thanks Paiva and his assistants for their services to Botafogo over the last few months,” the statement read.
Reacting to the news, Paiva admitted he was taken aback by the decision. “I don’t want to talk at the moment, there will be time for that. All I can say is that I’m shocked, and the staff and players are open-mouthed about the decision,” he told Globo Esporte. His abrupt dismissal has stirred debate among fans and pundits, who question whether the club acted too hastily given the team’s recent progress and high-profile victory.
