Bosnia-Herzegovina Eye Another Shock as Switzerland Seek First World Cup Win

Posted : 18 June 2026

Bosnia-Herzegovina will look to continue their impressive World Cup journey when they face Switzerland in a crucial Group B encounter in Los Angeles on Thursday. Having secured their place at the tournament with a memorable playoff victory over Italy, the Balkan nation is determined to show that achievement was no one-off success.

Experienced striker Edin Dzeko is expected to be available after missing Bosnia’s opening 1-1 draw against co-hosts Canada in Toronto. The 40-year-old forward could provide a significant boost as coach Sergej Barbarez prepares his side for another challenging test against one of Europe’s established football nations.

Barbarez expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to compete with higher-ranked opponents, pointing to recent results as proof of their quality. The Bosnia coach dismissed suggestions that Switzerland would underestimate his team because of the sizeable gap between the two nations in the FIFA rankings, insisting his players remain focused on their own performances rather than outside opinions.

Bosnia earned worldwide attention in March when they eliminated four-time world champions Italy in a dramatic playoff decided by penalties. Defender Nikola Katic believes the accomplishment has not received the recognition it deserves, arguing that discussion largely centered on Italy’s failure to qualify rather than Bosnia’s achievement.

Katic described the victory as a landmark moment for the national team, saying it strengthened belief within the squad and provided momentum for future challenges. Bosnia are competing in only their second World Cup finals, having previously appeared in the 2014 tournament in Brazil, where they were eliminated during the group stage.

The race for qualification from Group B remains wide open after the opening round of matches. All four teams are level on one point, with Switzerland also beginning their campaign with a draw after being held by Qatar. The result was particularly frustrating for the Swiss, who conceded a stoppage-time equalizer to a team that had never previously collected a World Cup point.

Midfielder Remo Freuler acknowledged Switzerland’s disappointment but stressed the importance of learning from the setback. He emphasized that protecting a lead requires greater defensive discipline and concentration, lessons the team hopes to apply when they take on Bosnia-Herzegovina in a match that could prove decisive in the battle for a place in the knockout rounds.
