Bosnia-Herzegovina moved a step closer to reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds for the first time in their history after securing a 3-1 victory over Qatar in their final Group B match on Wednesday.
The win lifted Bosnia-Herzegovina to four points, strengthening their chances of advancing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. Qatar, meanwhile, were eliminated from the competition, repeating their group-stage exit from the 2022 World Cup on home soil.
The European side made a strong start and controlled much of the early action, creating several opportunities before eventually taking the lead through teenage sensation Kerim Alajbegovic. The 18-year-old produced a stunning strike from outside the penalty area after weaving past defenders, becoming one of the youngest goalscorers in World Cup history.
Bosnia-Herzegovina doubled their advantage shortly afterward, with veteran captain Edin Dzeko playing a key role in the move. His effort took multiple deflections before ending up in the net, with the goal ultimately recorded as an own goal by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada.
Dzeko, making his 150th international appearance, continued to threaten and came close to adding another goal when he struck the post after breaking through the defense.
Despite Bosnia’s dominance, Qatar found a way back into the contest before halftime. Experienced forward Hassan Al-Haydos reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute, rewarding his side for an improved spell and giving the hosts hope of a comeback.
Qatar nearly equalized in first-half stoppage time, but a shot from Pedro Miguel struck the post, allowing Bosnia-Herzegovina to preserve their narrow lead heading into the break.
The second half proved more challenging for Qatar when Al-Haydos, the nation’s most-capped player, was forced off injured. The veteran left the field visibly emotional, raising questions about whether the appearance could mark the end of his international career.
As the match entered its closing stages, Bosnia-Herzegovina sealed the victory through Ermin Mahmic, who scored for the second consecutive game. The forward reacted quickest inside the penalty area to convert in the 80th minute, sparking jubilant celebrations among his teammates and supporters.
The result leaves Bosnia-Herzegovina in a strong position to progress to the last 32, while Qatar’s campaign ends with another disappointing group-stage elimination. The Bosnians must now wait for results elsewhere to determine whether their historic qualification dream becomes reality.
