Borussia Dortmund is considering an unusual short-term contract extension to keep Chelsea loanee Carney Chukwuemeka for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
The midfielder, who holds Austrian, English, and Nigerian nationalities, currently has a loan agreement that ends on June 30, but Dortmund is seeking to extend it by two weeks to cover the duration of the tournament.
The Club World Cup runs from June 15 to July 13, which clashes with the end date of Chukwuemeka’s loan, creating a potential gap in Dortmund’s squad during the competition.
To prevent losing him at a critical moment, Dortmund has opened discussions with Chelsea to negotiate a brief extension of his stay, according to reports from Bild and Ruhr24.
Club management views this short-term deal as important for maintaining team stability and ensuring squad depth during the final stages of the tournament.
Although Chukwuemeka has shown promise at Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund does not plan to make his move permanent or extend his loan for another full season, citing concerns about his injury history and fitness.
While the club’s leadership supports keeping him temporarily, Dortmund is also preparing for his eventual departure and has turned their attention to other midfield targets such as Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham and Lyon’s Rayan Cherki.
