Bologna, Fiorentina secure convincing Serie A wins to rekindle Champions League hopes

Posted : 11 February 2024

Bologna and Fiorentina revived their Champions League aspirations with convincing Serie A victories over Lecce and Frosinone, respectively, on Sunday.

Thiago Motta's Bologna secured a comfortable 4-0 win against Lecce, with Riccardo Orsolini scoring twice and Sam Beukema adding the opener.

Jens Odgaard contributed the final goal as Bologna, now tied in points with fourth-placed Atalanta, showcased their resurgence after a previous four-match winless streak.

Fiorentina, currently two points behind Bologna and Atalanta in seventh place, claimed their first league victory of 2024 by defeating Frosinone 5-1 in Florence.

Andrea Belotti, in his debut for Fiorentina, opened the scoring, followed by goals from Jonathan Ikone and Lucas Martinez Quarta, giving the home team a commanding three-goal lead at halftime.

Nicolas Gonzalez and Antonin Barak completed the comprehensive victory, breaking Fiorentina's previous run of three defeats and a draw since the start of the year.

Both Bologna and Fiorentina have reignited their Champions League aspirations, with the former now level on points with Atalanta, awaiting their outcome in a later match against Genoa. The race for a top-four finish in Serie A continues, with Napoli set to face third-placed AC Milan at the San Siro.
