Bodo/Glimt declines signing Ibrahim Hafiz Umar, preferring attacking midfielder

Posted : 04 March 2024

Norwegian Eliteserien champions Bodo/Glimt have decided against signing the promising Nigerian teenager Ibrahim Hafiz Umar. Umar's talents came to the fore when he secured the top scorer award at the Viareggio Cup, amassing an impressive ten goals in six matches. The tournament has a rich history of showcasing talents that later became Super Eagles stars, including Christian Obodo, Obafemi Martins, Eddy Onazi, and Joel Obi, who used it as a platform for launching their European careers.

While there were initial expectations that Umar would join Bodo/Glimt, the reigning Norwegian champions have opted not to offer him a contract after closely assessing his performance during the past weekend. According to reports from Bodo-based newspaper Avisa Nordland via NRK, Håvard Sakariassen, Bodo/Glimt's sporting administrative manager, indicated that they view Umar as more fitting for an attacking midfield or number 10 role. However, their current priority in the transfer market is securing an out-and-out center forward.

Sakariassen acknowledged positive discussions with Umar and his camp during the player's stay in Norway. Despite the decision not to sign him at this time, the interactions suggest a constructive engagement between the club and the talented Nigerian prospect. This development marks a strategic move by Bodo/Glimt as they actively seek a player with a more specific profile to meet their current squad needs.
