The 2026 edition of the Ex-Internationals Cup has received a major boost following a ₦40 million sponsorship support from the Bet9ja Foundation, reaffirming the growing status of the tournament as a platform dedicated to celebrating Nigeria’s football legends and inspiring upcoming talents.
The financial backing comes after the successful maiden edition of the competition, which reportedly impressed officials of the Bet9ja Foundation with its organisation and impact on football development.
According to the organisers, the support reflects the confidence of Bet9ja Chairman, Honorable Kunle Soname, in the vision and long-term objectives of the tournament. Soname’s endorsement of the initiative paved the way for the partnership after recommending the proposal to the Bet9ja Foundation.
The Foundation’s Executive Director, Gloria Ada Cuomo, alongside Marketing Manager, Omotola Oronti, subsequently embraced the project, citing its focus on preserving Nigeria’s football heritage while creating opportunities for younger generations.
Organisers also acknowledged the role played by several strategic meetings with Lukman, which helped align both parties on the goals of delivering a bigger and more impactful competition in 2026.
Reacting to the development, Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, Hajji Gafar, expressed appreciation to the Foundation and Honorable Soname for their support.
“We are grateful for the huge support from Bet9ja Foundation and the personal commitment shown by Honorable Kunle Soname. This partnership gives us a stronger platform to celebrate our football heroes and use their stories to inspire young talents across Lagos State,” Gafar stated.
He further described Soname as a major pillar of Nigerian football whose contributions continue to create opportunities for youths through sports development initiatives.
The 2026 Bet9ja Foundation Ex-Internationals Cup is expected to feature former Super Eagles stars and football legends in a celebration of sports, culture, and unity.
FC Nwosu will enter the competition as defending champions of the Ex-Internationals Cup.
The substantial sponsorship from the Bet9ja Foundation guarantees that the upcoming edition will elevate the standard of grassroots football and legendary recognition in the region. With key stakeholders aligned and defending champions FC Nwosu ready to return, the tournament is set to leave a lasting impact on youth empowerment. This partnership underscores the vital role of corporate backing in sustaining football development and honoring Nigerian sports icons.
