Benjamin Fredrick Returns to Fitness as Brentford and Super Eagles Prepare for Summer Transition

Posted : 30 April 2026

Super Eagles defender Benjamin Fredrick is finally ready to return to the pitch after a grueling six-month absence. The 20-year-old center-back has been sidelined since November 21, 2025, due to a significant knee injury sustained during training. This setback was particularly costly as it forced him to miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Before the injury, Fredrick was enjoying a stellar breakout campaign on loan with FCV Dender EH in the Belgian Pro League. He made 14 league appearances and started 10 matches, totaling over 860 minutes of top-flight action. His physical presence and ball-playing abilities made him a standout performer in Belgium despite his team’s general struggles.

The young defender’s impact was even more pronounced on the international stage under coach Eric Chelle. Fredrick started six consecutive matches for the Super Eagles and played every available minute during that span. He famously displaced veteran captain William Troost-Ekong in the starting lineup, signaling a changing of the guard in the Nigerian defense.

One of his most memorable performances came during a 4-1 World Cup qualifying victory against Gabon. Fredrick earned high praise for his ability to neutralize the threat of veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He formed a mobile and athletic partnership with Calvin Bassey that many experts believe is the future of the national team.

Now that he has achieved full fitness, Brentford officials plan to integrate him into the first-team squad for pre-season training next week. The Premier League club must decide whether to keep him in the squad or sanction another loan move. While a return to Dender is possible, the club’s likely relegation may force Brentford to look for a higher-level destination.

Nigeria’s national team is also eager to have him back following a third-place finish at the recent AFCON. The Super Eagles defense looked shaky at times during the tournament, conceding goals against Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda. His return provides a major boost ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup in London and future World Cup qualifiers.
