Benin Target Historic U-17 World Cup Qualification Against Nigeria's Flamingos

Posted : 10 July 2026

Benin Republic's U-17 women's national team will attempt to make history when they host Nigeria's Flamingos in the second leg of the final qualifying round for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

The decisive encounter will take place on Saturday at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé, Togo, with the winners securing one of Africa's qualification spots for next year's global tournament.

Benin heads into the match trailing 3-2 after a closely contested first leg at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne. Despite the defeat, the Young Amazons produced an impressive performance and remain firmly in contention ahead of the return fixture.

Head coach Idah Azonsou believes his players have what it takes to overturn the one-goal deficit and achieve a milestone by reaching the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup for the first time in the nation's history.

Speaking ahead of the crucial match, Azonsou acknowledged Nigeria's status as one of Africa's strongest women's football nations but insisted his team remains confident of causing an upset.

"We know Nigeria is one of the powerhouses of women's football, so it will be a very difficult match. But we also want to qualify for our first-ever FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup," Azonsou said during an interview with Benin TV (SRTB).

Nigeria's Flamingos, who have consistently been among Africa's leading teams at youth level, will be aiming to protect their narrow advantage and secure another appearance at the global tournament. The team has built a strong reputation in recent editions of the competition, making them one of the favourites to qualify.

With only one goal separating the two sides, the second leg is expected to be fiercely contested. Benin will look to capitalise on home support in neighbouring Togo, while Nigeria will rely on its experience and attacking quality to finish the job.

Qualification would represent a landmark achievement for Benin's women's football programme, while another World Cup appearance would reinforce Nigeria's dominance in African U-17 women's football.

Both teams are expected to approach the contest with urgency, knowing that a place at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup will be decided over 90 minutes.
