Benin Recall 30 Players to Camp Ahead of Crucial World Cup Qualifier Against Nigeria

Posted : 16 June 2026

The under-17 women's national team of Benin Republic has stepped up its preparations for the final round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The team, known as the Young Amazons, recently opened their training camp to prepare for a demanding two-legged fixture against regional rivals Nigeria.

Head coach Idah Azonsou has extended invitations to 30 players to participate in this intense training block. The group assembled at the Missérété Excellence Centre to begin tactical drills. This collective training program aims to iron out mistakes and fine-tune team strategies before the first leg.

Benin advanced to this final stage after recording a convincing 5-1 aggregate win over Sierra Leone in the previous round. The Young Amazons secured a solid 3-0 victory at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé before wrapping up the tie with a 2-1 away win. Their scoring form has given the technical crew confidence.

However, the upcoming opposition represents a much steeper mountain to climb for the Beninese youngsters. Nigeria’s Flamingos reached the final round in devastating fashion by crushing Guinea 11-0 on aggregate. The Nigerians won the first leg 5-0 away and then recorded a 6-0 blowout win in Ikenne.

The first leg of this critical West Zone B qualifying tie is scheduled to take place between July 3 and July 5. The definitive return match will follow shortly after, being played between July 10 and July 12. The winner over two legs will secure a ticket to the global tournament in Morocco.

Nigeria remains a traditional powerhouse at this age level, but Benin intends to create a historic upset. Coach Azonsou will spend the next few weeks working closely with his 30-player squad. They must build a watertight defensive unit to contain a relentless Nigerian attack that has averaged multiple goals per game.
