Benfica has confirmed that negotiations are underway to bring Jose Mourinho back to the club as their new head coach, following the recent dismissal of Bruno Lage after a surprising Champions League defeat to Qarabag. The Portuguese giants issued a statement to the country’s stock exchange authority, expressing hope that discussions with Mourinho would be finalized soon.
Mourinho, 62, expressed immediate interest in the role, telling reporters in Lisbon that he could not refuse an opportunity to coach Benfica. “When I was presented with the chance to lead Benfica, I didn’t hesitate to say I was interested,” he said, highlighting his enthusiasm for returning to the Portuguese side.
The club had suffered a shocking 3-2 home loss after leading 2-0 against Azerbaijan’s Qarabag, prompting swift managerial changes.
The experienced coach brings a rich history with Benfica, having begun his managerial career there as head coach in 2000 before moving on after 11 matches.
Mourinho subsequently built a highly decorated career with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma, and most recently Fenerbahce, where he was dismissed last month following a Champions League qualifying loss to Benfica.
His potential return to Benfica represents a major statement by the club as they aim to recover from a disastrous start to their European campaign.
