Benfica Appoint Marco Silva as José Mourinho Nears Real Madrid Return

Posted : 10 June 2026

Portuguese giants Benfica have confirmed the departure of head coach José Mourinho, with the veteran manager reportedly on the verge of taking charge of Real Madrid for a second time.

In a statement submitted to Portugal’s financial markets regulator, Benfica revealed that Real Madrid had formally expressed their intention to hire Mourinho by activating the release clause in his contract. The Spanish club is expected to pay €15 million ($17.25 million) to secure the 63-year-old’s services.

Shortly after confirming Mourinho’s exit, Benfica announced the appointment of Marco Silva as their new head coach. Silva has agreed to a two-year contract after ending his five-year spell with Fulham last week.

Mourinho’s anticipated return to Madrid follows the re-election of club president Florentino Pérez, whose renewed mandate has reportedly cleared the way for the experienced coach to rejoin the Spanish giants.

The Portuguese manager previously led Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013. During that period, he guided the club to a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey triumph, and a Spanish Super Cup victory while competing against the dominant Barcelona side managed by Pep Guardiola.

Real Madrid’s decision to bring Mourinho back represents a significant move after a disappointing 2025/26 campaign. The club ended the season without winning a major trophy, extending its drought to two consecutive years and increasing pressure on the leadership to deliver immediate success.

Earlier on Tuesday, Real Madrid also confirmed the departure of head coach Álvaro Arbeloa. Arbeloa had taken charge in January following the exit of Xabi Alonso and had already announced plans to step down at the conclusion of the season.

With Mourinho seemingly set for a high-profile return to the Santiago Bernabéu, Benfica will now look to begin a new chapter under Silva as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
