Bendel Insurance Thrash Ikorodu City 4-0 in Dominant NPFL Display

Posted : 02 March 2026

Bendel Insurance FC convincingly defeated Ikorodu City FC 4-0 in their Nigeria Premier Football League Match Day 28 encounter on Sunday, March 1, 2026 (with reports aligning to the weekend's fixtures around late February/early March 2026), at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

Young striker Alex Oweifaleya starred for the hosts, netting a hat-trick, while midfielder Wisdom Udom also found the net. The Benin Arsenals wasted no time in asserting dominance, capitalizing on their home advantage to avenge a narrow 1-0 loss in the reverse fixture earlier in Lagos.

After a disappointing away result in their previous match, Insurance came out aggressively with pacey, direct attacks, and sharp finishing that overwhelmed the visitors.

Oweifaleya opened the scoring in the 15th minute to set the tone. Wisdom Udom made it 2-0 in the 24th minute with a composed finish, and Oweifaleya added his second just three minutes later for a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.

The second half saw the young forward complete his treble in the 59th minute, sealing the emphatic win and ensuring the contest was beyond doubt.

The performance showcased clinical conversion and defensive solidity from the hosts, while Ikorodu City struggled with lapses in concentration and missed opportunities, despite their efforts to play possession-based football.

Bendel Insurance coach Kennedy Boboye commended his side's efficiency while acknowledging the visitors' play: “Ikorodu played very well, knocking and moving all over the field, but were unlucky not to score.” He praised the team's conversion rate but noted that there is room for improvement.

Ikorodu City technical adviser Bright Ozebagbe reflected on the defeat: “We were sloppy, and we had chances, but we failed to capitalize on them. We will try to correct the area that we found ourselves wanting in the game. We are not under pressure to win the league; we just want to try as much as possible to stay in the race.”

The result propels Bendel Insurance to sixth place with 41 points (following their climb after the win), boosting their mid-table push as they gear up for a challenging Match Day 29 away fixture against Rivers United FC.

Ikorodu City, despite slipping in the standings to third with 45 points from 28 matches, remain firmly in the title conversation but will need to address defensive and finishing issues to sustain their challenge.
