2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 14: Bendel Insurance Hold Abia Warriors to Goalless Draw

Posted : 25 November 2025

Abia Warriors' winless run stretched to three consecutive matches after they were forced to settle for a goalless draw against Bendel Insurance in their 2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 14 fixture at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Head coach Imama Amapakabo made just one change from the team that lost to Bayelsa United in Yenagoa, restoring Chukwuemeka Obioma to the starting lineup in place of Casmir Azubuike. However, the Warriors produced a lackluster first-half display, struggling to find rhythm or create meaningful chances.

The hosts thought they had won a penalty in the 6th minute when Obioma’s effort appeared to strike an Insurance defender's arm inside the box, prompting the referee to initially point to the spot. But under heavy protest from the visitors, the official reversed his decision and instead awarded a foul against Abia Warriors, ignoring strong appeals from the home side.

Abia Warriors improved significantly after the break, pushing aggressively for a breakthrough. A close chance came in the 51st minute when Sunday Megwo’s powerful header was cleared by the resilient Insurance defence. The introduction of Casmir Azubuike and Israel Joseph added urgency to the attack, with Azubuike nearly scoring moments later as his left-footed strike rattled the crossbar in the 63rd minute.

The Warriors continued to dominate and believed they had finally found the opener in the 70th minute when Suraj Lawal’s shot was tapped in by Kunle Adeleke, but the assistant referee ruled the effort out for offside. Despite sustained pressure and multiple late chances, Abia Warriors could not break down the determined Bendel Insurance backline, who held firm to secure a valuable away point.

Abia Warriors will now shift focus to their next challenge—a trip to Lagos for a clash with Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
