There are matches that entertain, and there are matches that define character. Sunday evening at the Samson Siasia Stadium belonged to the latter, as Bendel Insurance once again underlined their growing reputation for grit with a hard-earned point away from home.
Facing a Bayelsa United side desperate to climb away from the lower rungs of the table, Insurance arrived in Yenagoa with calm assurance and tactical discipline. The result was a tense but absorbing goalless draw in Match Day 26 of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League season.
Defensive steel on display
Since the arrival of Kennedy Boboye in October, the Benin Arsenals have rediscovered defensive stability and competitive balance. That transformation was evident once again as they neutralised Bayelsa’s attacking threats in front of their home supporters.
The hosts, who came into the encounter sitting 15th on the log, pushed for dominance but found Insurance compact and difficult to penetrate. Every forward surge was met with organised resistance, while Insurance showed composure in possession whenever opportunities arose to ease pressure.
A familiar outcome
Interestingly, this was not the first time both sides would cancel each other out this season. Their first-round meeting in Benin ended 1-1, reinforcing the evenly matched nature of the fixture.
This latest draw ensures Bendel Insurance maintain their strong position in the upper half of the table. With 38 points, they remain 6th and firmly in contention for continental places if their consistency holds.
Another tough test awaits
The road does not get any easier for Insurance. They will now embark on another away assignment as they travel to Lafia to face title-chasing Nasarawa United FC in Match Day 27 on Sunday, February 22.
If recent performances are anything to go by, however, Boboye’s revitalised side will relish the challenge. One thing is certain: Bendel Insurance are no longer easy prey, whether in Benin or beyond.
