Former Nigerian international forward Ben Akwuegbu has thrown his weight behind the re-election bid of the current Nigeria Football Federation President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau. The declaration comes ahead of the highly anticipated NFF Executive Committee elections. The elective congress is officially scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 26, 2026, in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
Akwuegbu praised the administrative approach of Gusau since he assumed leadership of the nation's football governing body in 2022. The former striker noted that the current board has successfully restored internal stability and harmony. According to him, the presidency has prioritised peaceful co-existence among various football stakeholders while rebuilding structural confidence within the domestic football scene.
The former Super Eagles star emphasized that these ongoing administrative reforms are already yielding visible improvements across the local football ecosystem. He noted that the benefits of grassroots development projects will become significantly clearer to Nigerians in the coming years. Akwuegbu described the incumbent federation chief as a sincere and passionate administrator who fully understands that sports cannot progress in an atmosphere of constant friction.
Furthermore, the ex-international highlighted the progressive growth observed in Nigeria’s domestic leagues under the current NFF leadership. He argued that retaining leadership continuity at the executive level is highly essential to sustain the positive momentum. According to Akwuegbu, disrupting the current administrative setup could delay or derail the full implementation of structural reforms meant to deepen national football development.
The countdown to the polls has already seen significant institutional preparations. The NFF leadership recently inaugurated its independent Electoral and Electoral Appeals Committees at the federation secretariat in Abuja to oversee the process. Barrister Matthew Burka'a, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, leads the Electoral Committee tasked with delivering a credible voting process for the 2026–2030 executive term.
The general assembly and elective congress in Nasarawa State will decide the administrative direction of the Nigerian game for the next four years. Gusau is expected to seek a second term to consolidate his ongoing programs against other potential contenders.
