Bayern Munich Crush Auckland City 10-0 in Club World Cup Opener

Posted : 16 June 2025

Bayern Munich made an emphatic start to their Club World Cup campaign on Sunday, demolishing amateur side Auckland City 10-0 in their opening Group C fixture. The match, held under sunny skies in Cincinnati, showcased the German champions' overwhelming quality, as Jamal Musiala came off the bench to score a rapid second-half hat-trick.

Kingsley Coman, Michael Olise, and Thomas Mueller each bagged braces, with Sacha Boey also on target. Despite the scoreline, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany emphasized the importance of remaining grounded, warning that sterner tests await.

The Bavarians wasted no time asserting their dominance, racing to a 6-0 lead by halftime. Coman opened the scoring just six minutes in—marking the first goal of the tournament—before adding another soon after.

Boey and Olise added further goals before Mueller struck, and Olise rounded off the half with a stunning curling shot. Although Harry Kane started, he did not find the net and was substituted just past the hour mark for Musiala, who then stole the spotlight.

Auckland City managed to limit the damage briefly in the second half, but Musiala's entrance reignited Bayern’s attack. The 21-year-old scored three goals in just 18 minutes, including one from the penalty spot after being fouled.

Mueller completed the rout with his 250th goal for Bayern, capping a performance that underscored the gulf between the two sides. Auckland, who have won the Oceania Champions League 13 times, were composed in defeat, with interim coach Ivan Vicelich expressing pride in his amateur squad’s effort.

The result equaled Bayern’s record winning margin in the Bundesliga and served as a strong statement of intent from the two-time Club World Cup champions. New signing Jonathan Tah made his debut in central defense, helping keep the clean sheet intact.

Bayern will next face Boca Juniors in Miami on Friday, while Auckland City look to bounce back against Benfica in Orlando. Though the outcome was expected, the match highlighted both Bayern’s lethal firepower and the inspiring journey of their amateur opponents.
