Bayer Leverkusen Makes History with Unbeaten Bundesliga Triumph

Posted : 18 May 2024

Bayer Leverkusen achieved an unprecedented feat in Bundesliga history by securing an undefeated season, clinching the title with a 2-1 victory over Augsburg on Sunday. This remarkable accomplishment under the leadership of Xabi Alonso is underscored by several impressive statistics.

The most striking figure is undoubtedly the zero losses Bayer Leverkusen recorded throughout the Bundesliga campaign, making them the first team ever in German football history to achieve such a feat. Their unbeaten streak extends beyond the league, encompassing 51 matches across all competitions this season, comprising 34 Bundesliga fixtures, 12 Europa League encounters, and five German Cup matches.

This triumph marks only the second Bundesliga title in Bayer Leverkusen's 120-year history, adding to their previous victories in the 1988 Europa League and the 1993 German Cup. With the league title secured in April, the team now has the opportunity to vie for two additional trophies, facing Atalanta in the Europa League final and Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final.

Beyond their unbeaten record, Bayer Leverkusen's dominance is further highlighted by their formidable offensive prowess. They have consistently scored goals late in matches, netting 15 times after the 90th minute and 33 times after the 80th minute across all competitions this season. Additionally, their resilience was demonstrated in breaking a 59-year UEFA record for the longest unbeaten streak, previously held by Benfica.

With a final points tally of 90, Bayer Leverkusen's season ranks among the best in Bundesliga history, trailing only Bayern Munich's 2012-13 campaign. Individual accolades, such as Florian Wirtz's three Bundesliga Player of the Month awards and impressive goal-scoring performances from players like Victor Boniface and Alex Grimaldo, further cement Bayer Leverkusen's extraordinary season.
