2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 8: Bayelsa United Hands Rivers United First Defeat of the Season

Posted : 14 October 2025

Bayelsa United stunned Rivers United 2-1 in Port Harcourt, ending their rivals’ unbeaten NPFL run and securing their first win in five games.

Bayelsa United continued their dominance over regional rivals Rivers United with a stunning 2-1 victory at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, inflicting the hosts’ first defeat of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

The highly anticipated South-South derby, originally scheduled for Sunday, was completed on Monday after heavy rainfall rendered the pitch unplayable. The result marked Rivers United’s first league loss of the season and only their second home defeat in five years—both suffered against the same opponents, Bayelsa United.

Shuaibu Garba opened the scoring for Bayelsa United in the 28th minute, finishing smartly from a tight angle after a clever exchange with Emo James. Rivers United appeared to have equalized through Ubong Friday just before halftime, but the goal was ruled out for offside, frustrating the home supporters.

Bayelsa United extended their lead midway through the second half when substitute Chinedu Emmanuel dribbled past his marker and calmly slotted home past goalkeeper John Noble, again assisted by James. Despite late pressure from Rivers United, Bayelsa goalkeeper Joshua Enahoro produced two key saves to preserve the win.

The victory lifts Bayelsa United to 11th place with 11 points from eight matches, while Rivers United remain fourth with 12 points and a game in hand. The Pride of Rivers will now shift their focus to continental duty as they travel to Mozambique for their CAF Champions League preliminary tie against Black Bulls on October 18.

For Bayelsa United, the result ends a five-match winless streak and could mark a turning point in their campaign. They will aim to maintain momentum when they host Kun Khalifat in Yenagoa on Matchday 9, seeking back-to-back wins for the second time this season.
