Bayelsa United FC have climbed to the top of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table with six points after recording their second successive win of the season.
Two second-half goals by Wisdom Magbisa and Emo James secured a comfortable 2-0 victory for the Prosperity Boys over newly-promoted Barau FC of Kano in the Match Day 2 encounter at Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa.
Bayelsa United’s new Technical Adviser, Monday Odigie, made one change from the team that defeated Shooting Stars of Ibadan, with the State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, members of the State Executive Council, and other political appointees in attendance.
Midfielder Wisdom Magbisa opened the scoring in the 55th minute from the penalty spot after Nura Ibrahim handled Magbisa's rebounded effort from Jawad Mustapha's low cross. Magbisa sent Barau FC’s goalkeeper the wrong way, capitalizing on the visitors’ inability to convert chances in the first half.
Barau FC came close to taking the lead in the 19th minute when Jude Mamman’s effort hit the woodwork, ensuring Bayelsa United’s young goalkeeper, Clinton Andy, maintained a clean sheet after matchday one against 3SC.
The game was sealed in the 73rd minute when substitute Garba Shuaibu mesmerized Barau FC defenders before setting up Emo James, who stylishly slotted the ball into the net, leaving former Bayelsa United coach Ladan Bosso returning to Kano empty-handed.
The Prosperity Boys will next face Niger Tornadoes in Match Day 3 in Ilorin, while Barau FC will host Bendel Insurance.
Bayelsa United currently lead the 2025/2026 NPFL standings with six points after two games, closely followed by newly-promoted Warri Wolves, who also have six points.
In his post-match reaction, Technical Adviser Monday Odigie commended the players for their professionalism and discipline throughout the encounter, stating that the team would continue to improve as the league progresses.
Despite the defeat, Barau FC coach Ladan Bosso praised his players for their effort and expressed confidence that mistakes would be corrected ahead of their next home game.
